Masters Swimmers to Compete in Germany

Published: Friday, February 2, 2018

Several members of our successful Masters swim team are travelling to Flensburg in Germany to compete in an international swim event. The Club had been exploring the possibility of forging links with one of South Ribble’s twin town teams when we discovered that Flensburger Schwimmklub based in northern Germany actually host an international event for masters swimmers each February.

This will be the 37th running of the event, so we have got together a group of nine swimmers who are flying off on 23 February to compete in the event which takes place on Saturday, 24 February. This will be a new venture for the club and we are hopeful that it proves successful and enables us to develop further links with the Flensburger club.

The event is a tough competition that is supported by swimmers from clubs across Europe and often results in record breaking performances so our swimmers will need to be on their best form. The club swim in a university 50m pool but there will be a boom in place so that the event is swum short course. The programme differs to what we usually see in the UK with one of the relays being a 4 x 50m Breaststroke event - now that’s a new one for us! With the programme being in German the team are busy trying to get to grips with the event names - did you know that the German for Butterfly is ‘Schmetterling' and Individual Medley is ‘Lagen’? The team are certainly going to have to listen carefully to the announcer if they are to get to their blocks on time.

Thanks to the hard work of our Fundraising Officer, Gayle Adams, and the very kind financial support of Melvyn Gray at 365 Property Buyer the club have been able to buy fleeces for the swimmers specifically for the trip, and if the weather reports are anything to go by we think they’ll need them!

Here’s wishing them all the best of luck for the event.
